CRIME PREVENTION -- Out Alone
- At night, when at all possible, try and stay on well-lighted streets, avoid doorways, shrubs, dark and shadowy areas near buildings and other areas a potential attacker can hide. Carry a flashlight with you.
- Stay away from deserted buildings, businesses and parking lots. Be cautious
and check your surroundings, even during daylight hours.
- Be cautious around elevators and if you are suspicious of another passenger
wait for the next car. Trust your instincts. Stay near the control panel and if you get into trouble hit the alarm and as many floor buttons as you can.
- While walking keep alert and look confident. Make eye contact with persons around you. Dress in loose clothing and proper shoes that will allow to run easily to avoid attack.
- If a car is following you, change direction. If a person is following you, turn
and look at them. This gives you time to think and lets this person know you are aware of their presence. In either case, walk to the nearest public place.
HAVE A PLAN AND KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO, IF ATTACKED. RESIST OR APPEAR TO COOPERATE, AND LOOK FOR YOUR CHANCE TO ESCAPE.
- If possible walk with a friend.
- If you are in a cab or a vehicle of another ask them to wait until you get into your home.
- If you take your wallet out in public try to not reveal your money or credit cards.
- A female should carry her purse next to her body with the flap or clasp towards the body. A male should carry his wallet in an inside or front pants pocket.
- Don't leave your purse on the back of a door or on the floor in a restroom, theater, restaurant, or other public places. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PURSE UNATTENDED OR OPEN IN A SHOPPING CART. Keep your keys in your pocket, not in your purse.
- NEVER HITCHHIKE.
