CRIME PREVENTION -- IN YOUR CAR
- While walking to your car, have your keys ready in your hand as you approach. Before getting into your car check the rear seat and floor for anyone who may be hiding in the car. Get into your vehicle and lock the doors behind you before getting settled in and securing any packages.
- Look for places to park that are well lighted and lock your car each
and every time you get out even if you're only running into store for a minute. Never leave a purse, or briefcase in plain view in your car. Secure these items in the trunk.
- If you must leave your car keys with a parking attendant or a service station; leave only your car key and not your keys to your home. These can be easily duplicated while you are gone.
- Keep your doors locked and windows almost all the way up, especially
in heavy traffic. Keep a purse or briefcase out of sight.
- If someone tries to force his or her way into your car repeatedly honk your horn and drive away if possible.
- If you are being followed, DO NOT DRIVE DIRECTLY HOME. Drive to the nearest 24-hour Police Station, Fire Station, Hospital Emergency Entrance, all night gas station or restaurant, or other place where there are people. If you have a cellular phone call 9-1-1.
- You should not travel, especially at night, when you are low on gas.
- If you vehicle becomes disabled, turn on your emergency flashers, raise the hood and hang a handkerchief from your window to attract attention. Use a CALL POLICE sign if you have one. If someone stops keep your doors locked and windows rolled up and ask them to call police for you. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT.
- Do not leave packages or mail with your name and address showing inside of your vehicle. Do not leave your work identification showing on any purse strap or other items in your car.
